Porto's municipal water company bought 20,724,716 m³ of treated water from Águas do Douro e Paiva in 2022, about 56,780 m³ a day. Its six active reservoirs hold at most 125,450 m³, or roughly 2.2 days of that average demand.
A city without a source
Águas e Energia do Porto does not abstract or treat drinking water. Its bulk supplier serves 22 municipalities and about 1.8 million people, and in April 2026 announced a €370,000 rehabilitation of its Lever Montante intake on the Crestuma-Lever reservoir on the Douro. Water entering Porto's own network reached 22,127,345 m³ in 2024, up from 20,118,457 m³ in 2020.
The price of the first cubic meter
The bulk tariff for 2026 is €0.3944/m³, plus a CTA component of €0.0856/m³, up from €0.3874 and €0.0841 in 2025. Porto's lowest domestic block in 2026 costs €0.4945/m³, and the city's own tariff rose 2.8% in 2026 after 3.1% in 2025.
What the city controls
Within the city, the company runs 824.4 km of water mains, 572.2 km of sewers and 642 km of stormwater collectors. Its 2025 results met the contract targets for safe water, at 99.76%, and for supply failures, at 0.494 per 1,000 connections. It missed the flooding target, with 0.79 occurrences per 1,000 connections against 0.70.
